2018 CLBR Zero: Squirrels

On December 19, CLBR will have our annual year-end Heroes and Zeros episode in which, with guests Brenda Christensen, Denise Howell and Dan Tynan, we highlight those doing wonderful things on the internet and those deserving a cyber lump of coal.  This year, in order to give credit (and shame) where it is due,  I am naming my hero and zero “nominees” individually and my first zeros are squirrels.

Yes, squirrels as in “Rocky J” and “Bring Me Moose and . . .”

In a 2017 presentation at a hacking conference, Cris Thomas, a strategist at Tenable Network Security,  linked squirrels to 879 power outages around the world.  Thomas noted, “”35 years of cyberwar and the squirrels are winning.”

Thomas wants to highlight how vulnerable the U.S. power grid truly is.  A U.S. government report found that destroying just nine of the 55,000 substations across the US would black out the country for up to 18 months.”
