On December 20, CLBR will have our annual year-end Heroes and Zeros episode in which, with guests Brenda Christensen, Denise Howell and Dan Tynan, we highlight those doing wonderful things on the internet and those deserving a cyber lump of coal. This year, in order to give credit (and shame) where it is due, I am naming my hero and zero “nominees” individually and today’s dishonoree is President Donald J. Trump, the Twitterer in Chief.
President Donald J. Trump
In 2015, Trump was named a Zero for being a “Champion Bigot’ and “Wanna-be Internet Censor’. Candidate Trump re-tweeted white nationalist accounts on a number of occasions.
As President, Trump has continued to embrace and espouse white nationalism and hatred of immigrants and Muslims, often via Twitter. His retweeting anti-muslim videos by a British hate group last week led to his denunciation by British Prime Minister Theresa May.
Opinion polls show that between 2/3rds and as many as 70-percent of Americans do not approve of President Trump’s tweets which the Anne Frank Center has accused of promoting hate speech.
Just as concerning has been the President’s assault on a free and open press, which can be summarized by four tweets. In his first month in office, Trump declared the non-right wing media “the enemy of the American People!
A few months later, he tweeted a video of him giving CNN a smackdown.
By the fall, the President threatened NBC’s broadcast license.
Then a few weeks ago, on the day that Russia enacted restrictions on foreign news outlets, Trump tweeted, “CNN International is still a major source of (Fake) news, and they represent our Nation to the WORLD very poorly. The outside world does not see the truth from them!” Then he dropped this.
The tweets undermined CNN coverage in authoritarian Libya and were the culmination of a year of attacks on the media not seen since the dark days of President Nixon.
