Tennis legend and activist Arthur Ashe born.  Ashe is the only African-American man to win at Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open.  He is also the first African-American inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame.

French agents bomb and sink the Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior in Auckland harbor.
