SILICON BEACH UPDATE WITH LORI KOZLOWSKI
WEDNESDAY JUNE 25, 2013
10-11 AM PACIFIC ON WEBMASTERRADIO.FM
We will provide an update the state of Silicon Beach, following the second-annual Silicon Beach Fest last week in Santa Monica. Our guest will be the lead chronicler of Silicon Beach – Forbes columnist Lori Kozlowski.
In her latest column, Taking the Temperature in Silicon Beach, she explains:
There is no doubt, this is a place of opportunity. And a home to creative talent that not only seeks out those opportunities, but also creates them. As startup communities go, Los Angeles was ranked number three in the world, at the end of 2012.
The great news is that the Silicon Beach community is still growing. More startups, incubators, and funds are showing up.
. . . Whereas in 2012, Los Angeles saw a froth of companies crop up and quickly form, in 2013 — the tenor seems to be more serious. Investors are looking more critically at business models, and less so at quick ideas. Incubators and accelerators can afford to be more selective
. . . . .And as for this community, “Silicon Beach” — which was once just a made-up name — is now a very real region of technological and economic development.
Lori currently writes a column for Forbes about entrepreneurs, startups, and technology. Previously, she served as senior digital editor at the Los Angeles Times. She also headed mobile technology and emerging platforms for latimes.com.
She has been on staff at Entrepreneur Magazine, has worked with MIT Media Lab startups, and has served as adjunct faculty at Chapman University. She completed her Master of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California.
We will also discuss insights shared by ROC CEO Ron McElroy and Silicon Beach tech veteran Tony Winders now with GumGum.
. . . . Plus an update on the Snowden and PRISM fall out.
