The first transcontinental telegraph message is sent from California to President Abraham Lincoln.

1884

The Providence Grays clinch the first World Series with a 3-1 win over the New York Metropolitans at the Polo Grounds.  The teams played the third game anyway the next day and the Grays completed the 3-0 sweep with a 12-2 win.

1901

Annie Edson becomes the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel — on her 63rd birthday.

1940

The 40-hour work week went into effect.

1945

The United Nations is born when the UN Charter was ratified by a majority of signatories, China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States.

1960

A Soviet ballistic missile explodes at launchpad of Soviet’s Cosmodrome space facility killing over 100.

1973

Yom Kippur War ends.

 

1992

The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Atlanta Braves 4-2 to bring the World  Series crown to Canada.
